July 16, 2004 -- The Chicago Breastfeeding Taskforce will celebrate World Breastfeeding Month with a day of activities designed to promote the importance of mother’s milk as the gold standard of infant nutrition. This exciting outdoor event will be held at Stockton drive near the Lincoln Park Zoo lagoon (next to Café Brauer), on Saturday, August 7, 2004 from 10 am to 2 pm.
Breastfeeding women, families, fathers, children of all ages and the general public are welcome to enjoy refreshments, raffles and games while learning more about the benefits of breastfeeding. Representatives from local health departments, hospitals, community organizations and the Chicago Breastfeeding Taskforce will be available to provide useful materials and to answer questions about breastfeeding.
The benefits of breastfeeding include fewer respiratory infections, decreased incidences of allergies and chronic diseases, improved mother-baby bonding and overall better health outcomes for mothers and infants. In addition, families with at least one breastfeeding child may save at least $400 per year in infant food costs. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) advocates breastfeeding as the optimal nutrition for infants.
The August 7th event is part of the annual World Breastfeeding Week and Breastfeeding Month activities.
